how to spend a day in america’s newest national park

west virginia got ultimate bragging rights in 2021 with america’s newest national park! the new river gorge national park and preserve, #63 on the list, is located near fayetteville, a town that also has it’s own claim to fame. it’s been called one of america’s coolest small towns. one day in the new river gorge and you'll understand why national parks are america's best idea. my friend hannah & i explored the gorge last week and i’m here to share how to get the most out of your day in this national park:

start the day getting your heart pumping with a hike. long point trail is arguably the most picturesque hike in the park. this 3-mile roundtrip hike takes you through the wilderness to an incredible view of the new river gorge bridge. it’s a relatively easy hike, too! there’s a bit of a downhill climb at the end (meaning it’s an uphill battle back) but other than that it’s super simple. the area has a ton of trails though, so if this isn’t your speed, you’ll find one that is!

after the hike you’ll have definitely worked up an appetite. cathedral cafe is less than 3 miles from the trailhead and such a charming space. the stained glass windows bring beautiful light and colors into the restaurant. the converted church is just as spiritual as it was originally intended — it’s a place to gather and celebrate in town. wholesome foods & delicious dishes fill their menu. my favorite was the grilled cheese (are we surprised?) and hannah loved the bread pudding.

stroll around the historic town of fayetteville afterwards. named in honor of marquis de lafayette, the town dates back to 1837 and was heavily contested during the civil war, being fought over by both sides. you’ll find unique antique stores, specialty outfitters and clothing boutiques. the hobbit hole & new river antique mall are personal favorites. i couldn’t possibly need any more things but i always find an excuse to come home with one-of-a-kind pieces. nearby thread 101 on west maple is a vintage boutique with an ever-changing selection.

if you don't want to shop & are still up for an adventure you can get your adrenaline fix with a whitewater rafting trip on the beast of the east, with a zipline tour through the trees or with a daring catwalk underneath the bridge. i can only vouch for whitewater rafting at this time, but ziplining and bridge walk are bucket list items of mine!

before you hit the road, and if you're still hungry, stop by the pink pig on south court street. you'll smell the smokey barbeque flavor before you lay eyes on the modest roadside pit stop. hannah ordered the pulled pork sandwich piled high with barbeque sauce and a side of mac & cheese. i think you'll be surprised to find it's got a bit of kick -- diced up jalapenos are the secret ingredient!

on your way home, don't forget to stop by the new river gorge visitor center to get one last look at the modern marvel. the new river gorge bridge, constructed from cor-ten steel was completed in 1977 and is the longest steel span in the western hemisphere. a short path takes you closer to the bridge, perfect for an insta-worthy picture. over the summer, i visited with my parents and snapped a few.

so there you have it, one day in america's newest national park! though i think after a day, you'll likely want to spend more because one day just isn't enough to appreciate the area. happy travels!
