i won’t mess around with much of an introduction, let’s get right into it!!!
when life gives you lululemons by lauren weisberger
alex’s rating: 9.7/10
february started off with a belly laugh, reading lauren weisberger’s when life gives you lululemons. another story told by the perspective of three different characters — emily, the ex-runway assistant turned badass pr extraordinaire; miriam, the NYC lawyer keeping afloat in the suburbs; and karolina, the supermodel who’s making front page news with a DUI. this unique trio forms an unbeatable bond, tearing down all who threaten them! such an enjoyable read!!
tangerine by christine mangan
alex’s rating: 4.2/10
i’ll set the scene. it’s the 1950s and it’s hot. miserably hot. the heat is unforgiving in morocco and alice shipley is not enjoying it. john, her husband works all the time and alice rarely leaves her flat. it all begins to change the day her old college roommate lucy shows up, unannounced and seemingly unwanted. something happened between the two of them in college and alice just can’t figure out why she’s suddenly shown up. when john goes missing, secrets start to reveal themselves and alice is all but certain lucy is behind it. ugh. this had the making of such a good story but the ending (which i won’t tell you) was trash. just really didn’t like this one.
the golden couple by greer hendricks and sarah pekkanen
alex’s rating: 9.8/10
this month’s botm pick was a real thriller. it’s a slow build but one made all the more interesting by the end. enter marissa and matthew bishop — a gorgeous couple with an 8-year-old son living outside of washington, d.c. no couple is without flaws however and the bishops are about to drop a bombshell. marissa’s had an affair and she seeks help from a therapist who has recently just lost her license. avery chambers’ methods are unconventional but the reviews speak for themselves, and the bishops are willing to try anything. with each chapter, the reader slowly pulls back the veil of this golden couple to reveal something shocking. no spoilers from me though, you’ll have to read it to find out what happens.
life at the dakota by stephen birmingham
alex’s rating: 9.8/10
you know i can’t turn down a historical story!!! my aunt bought me this next read, life at the dakota. it’s about an apartment building in new york city whose hallowed walls have housed movie stars, business moguls, princesses, musicians — you name it. the apartment building (which is really more a mansion) is named the dakota after jealous naysayers joke that edward clark is constructing a “folly” in a less than desirable portion of the city, essentially in the dakotas. it ended up being prime real estate, sitting on what’s known today as central park west. i was totally captivated by the history and sheer opulence of the dakota. instead of our typical studio and one/two bedroom apartments, one unit at the datoka might consist of 15 rooms, including 4 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms and a kitchen. all units are completely unique with no two alike and upon opening in 1884, all 65 units were filled without ever needing to advertise. any history buff would really appreciate this read.
that’s it for february folks! what was your favorite book this month?
